Why I Have This Practice
I have always been drawn to what lives beneath the surface—the memories, identities, experiences, and inherited stories that shape how we see ourselves and one another. My studies in psychology gave me language for that inner world, while art gave me a way to enter it.
I first began intentionally using art as a tool while working as an ABA therapist, supporting verbal and nonverbal people on the spectrum as they communicated, learned, socialized, and built community together. Seeing what creativity opened at an individual level made me curious about what it could do within entire communities.
My practice grew from there. I became interested in how our personal stories connect to something larger—how family patterns, cultural traditions, expectations, struggles, and joys are carried across generations and eventually shape the communities we live in.
Today, I see creativity as both expression and preservation: a way to hold onto how we remember, where we come from, and how we make meaning of our lives.
That belief has carried me beyond the canvas and into curating, arts and health, and community spaces. Whether painting a portrait or creating an experience for hundreds of people, I return to the same question: What can art help us see within ourselves that we might otherwise miss?
Because the more deeply we understand ourselves, the more capable we become of understanding—and caring for—the world around us.
